Anyways, this has got nothing to do with Lady Gaga. The collection that you see in the video is the current collection of Malaysia's very own up-and-coming designer, Andy Yap. He has garnered wins in MIFA ( Malaysia International Fashion Alliance ) 2008 semi-final, 2009 Stylo Young Designer's Award, Malaysian Footwear Designer competition 2009 and the coveted Mercedes-Benz STYLO Fashion Awards MODA Emerging Designer of the Year 2009.
Now let's talk about the video and see behind the scene.
The Avant-Garde video was directed by Joel Soh.
Here's a part of the press release that I have received.
Director Joel Soh’s motivation for creating a high fashion avant-garde video is to have an exclusive space within this world to highlight the naked expression of each of Andy’s designs. The set is left bare and the models made to look like mannequins so as to assure the viewer’s sole focus on the garments. The video is bizarre and irrational, as it is meant to transport the viewer into a realm that realizes fashion as the embodiment of self-expression.
The video ties in with Andy Yap’s current collection, as he aims to create a sense of dissonance through the juxtaposition of contradicting elements. It is composed of a crazy blend of all the basic elements of art: lines, shapes, colours, and textures, such as his pairing a pair of striped pants with a feather bolero, using nontraditional materials such as rubber and patent, and experimenting with wild, bright colours. Visually, his collection complements the video in that both aim for a sense of bewilderment, as well as intrigue; as Andy invites his viewers to ponder over the erratic nature of his outfits, Joel provides an otherworldly realm for the audience to fully bask in Andy’s vision.
Personally, I think this is a kind of innovation that should be encouraged in the Malaysian fashion scene.
